(or the Mall at the End of Time)

written by Chelsea Sutton

Synopsis

A speculative comedy/horror adventure through the dangers of nostalgia with esoteric punk girl bands, an animatronic mall cop, and time travel.

The play is set in the near-ish future in an old abandoned mall in Southern California. The mall has been transformed into an amusement park that dabbles in the “history” of the mall and the land surrounding it. The mall’s most passionate engineer, Tobi, has been having trouble with her pet project, Officer Steve, an animatronic mall cop. Tobi has been programming memories from her own life, aspects of her father in particular and an old band she loved called The Wendigo Girls, in order to give Officer Steve some personality - but he continues to be buggy. On the same night Merce, Tobi’s best friend and fellow engineer, finds out about Tobi’s odd programming of Officer Steve, a mysterious stranger (River) appears from within the walls of the mall and takes Tobi back in time to 1996, when the mall was still thriving, Sam Goody was a thing, and The Wendigo Girls were nearing the end of their fatal last tour. It’s a little bit Bill & Ted, a little bit fantasy/horror/adventure, and a little bit Mallrats.
